Textbook perfect example of a Japanese Mounted Police Hanger Type 2, as
delineated in Fuller and Gregory's seminal work, 'Japanese Military and
Civil Swords and Dirks' (Charlottesville, Howell Press, 1997; p.190). What's
even cooler about this one is that the blade is laminated steel, unlike the
typical machine-made blades of this type of sword. This style of hanger is
quite scarce. Most likely from the late 1800's/early 1900's, although F&G
say that the dating of these weapons is uncertain.
