From the mid 1300's through the late 1400's, the increasing sturdiness of plate armor rendered the sword less and less effective against a fully armored warrior. Hammers, axes and maces soon became the weapon of choice for close-range combat between mounted knights. Generally lighter and faster than a mace, the war hammer was one of the premier anti-armor weapons of the 15th century. This ultimate can opener is British, circa 1430.
