There's no sense in re-inventing the wheel, so when the US Army was looking for protective helmet designs in the midst of WWI, they turned for inspiration to the medieval armor collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bashford Dean, the curator, was deeply involved in the experiments. This particular helmet was a combination of the standard 1917 Expeditionary Forces helm, merged with a visor designed to deflect shrapnel by the distinguished American occulist, Colonel W. Holland Wilmer. Never implemented in battle, this helmet is nevertheless a fascinating historical memento. This replica is steel with an antique brass finish. It has a leather adjustable liner and an adjustable military web chinstrap.
