Throught the history of man (and warfare), the mace developed from a stone topped club to an elaborate weapon. To an unarmored opponent the mace was extremely debilitating, shattering limbs and crushing skulls. For an armored opponent it could crush plate and traumatize the flesh beneath. For centuries the mace has also been a symbol of power, suggestive of the wealth and status of their owners - although their use was not exclusive to the privileged. This excellent eight-flanged example from the 1500's has a blackened rust-protective coating, and the bottom of the haft is wrapped in black leather to facilitate a firm grip.
