A giant alien-made mystery sword, with an indecipherable runic inscription
inlaid with some unknown substance on the grip. Please, for god's sake, if
you can translate the language please let me know - this may be the only
clue we have to thwart an upcoming invasion that will destroy the
Earth!!!
Well, actually this is an unusually large talibon / garab. After WWII
ended, many of the edged weapons used in the struggle against the Japanese
invaders were sold to American GI's to take home as souveniers of the war.
Some came back to the US in their original mounts, some were re-hilted and
re-scabbarded to make them more decorative for hanging over victorious
mantles. This is obviously one of the latter, but it's still one heck of a
meaty sharp blade that most likely is from the late 1800's or early 1900's.
It probably deserves to be rehilted into fittings without the touristy
mother-of-pearl inlay, but I still have
way too much ethnocultural respect (assistant curator, Pennsylvania State
University Museum of Anthropology, 1981-1983) in me to alter the weapon
myself.
