Iron axe from the Calaba of southeast Nigeria (Ondo State, Okene area). Made
completely from iron (including the "twisted ribbon" at the base of the
handle. Often used as currency, particularly for dowry. Decorated with
incised herring-bone pattern. Circa 1900-1940's, most likely the earlier end
of that range.
